Walter A. Maier, Th.D.

Modified Service, Exegetical Theology

A 1948 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Dr. Walter A. Maier II, son of the founder of the International Lutheran Hour, served as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Elma, New York, 1949-1954; Hope Lutheran Church, Levittown, Pennsylvania, 1954-1961; and Hope Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1961-1965. During the period of his pastoral ministry he also held various official positions in the Eastern and South Wisconsin Districts, LCMS. Joining the faculty of Concordia Theological Seminary in 1965, Dr. Maier taught courses in New Testament Exegetical Theology full time for the next 35 years, until he began modified service in the year 2000.

Dr. Maier undertook his post-graduate work at Washington University, St. Louis, obtaining the Master of Arts degree in the classical languages, 1949; Marquette University, Milwaukee, 1961-1962; the graduate school of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, receiving the Master of Sacred Theology degree in Exegetical and Systematic Theology, 1967, and Doctor of Theology degree in the same disciplines, 1970.

At the Fort Wayne seminary Dr. Maier also served as chairman of the Department of Exegetical Theology, as Academic Dean, as Vice-president/Assistant to the President, as chairman of the seminary’s 150th Anniversary Committee (1996), and as director of the seminary’s Distance Education Program Leading to Ordination (D.E.L.T.O.) While teaching at the seminary Dr. Maier was a lecturer and preacher throughout his church body. From 1973-1995 he served as a vice-president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. In 1999 Dr. Maier received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Concordia College, Bronxville, New York, for his direction of the D.E.L.T.O. program as well as for his other services to the LCMS.

In 1951 Dr. Maier was united in marriage to Leah M. Gach of Elma. The Lord blessed this union with two sons—Walter A. Maier III, presently a professor of Old Testament Exegesis at the Fort Wayne seminary, and David P.E. Maier, President of the Michigan District, LCMS.
